Building a Reader At Home

first grade sight words

More sight words to learn!

The Daily Five and CAFE in First Grade

The Daily Five and CAFE are researched based methods that foster literacy independence in the elementary grades - that means they are effective methods to teach and learn reading.  Your child will do five things as part of Daily Five:  Read to yourself, read to someone, work on writing, listen to reading and word work.  You will see fewer worksheets coming home, but you will see lots of enthusiasm, independence and stamina.  You will regularly hear from me and your child about what strategy they are currently working on - this is the CAFE portion of our literacy learning.  CAFE stands for:  Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency and Expanding Vocabulary.  The goals are uniquely your child's based on what they need to learn.

Raz Kids and Kindles in the Classroom

Everyone has home and school access to RAZ kids.  This allows children to listen to and read thousands of books at their level and beyond.  RAZ kids is web based and can be accessed from any device (the App is free - the school has purchased the license).  Each child has a password icon.  They will enter: CPedrotti when they log on and then their password icon.  I have asked them to listen to the story, then read the story, then take the quiz.  If they miss any questions, then I ask that they re-listen or re-read the story and take the quiz again.  One of the cool features of RAZ kids is that they can record themselves reading the story and I can later listen to them.  If you have a microphone on your device, I encourage them to record themselves.  If you have ear buds that your child can keep at school that would be great.  Send the earbuds in ziplock bag labeled w/their name and we will keep them in book baskets.

Courtesy of the Rohnerville Educational Foundation, we have 5 Kindle Fires for our classroom.  We are so thankful!

Learning Every Day!

We are becoming more independent every day.  All the first graders are spending a lot of time reading and writing each day.  The class loves make lists and write each other letters.  We are just learning how to use a proofreading checklist to help us check our own writing.  Some authors we are really loving right now:  Tedd Arnold, Mo Willems, Dav Pilkey and Cynthia Rylant.  The class loves the Captain Underpants series, Poppleton series, Ricky Ricotta books, Fly Guy series and The Fancy Nancy series.
